Exercise to prevent the winter common cold and flu

With the onset of winter we begin to worry about how to prevent the common cold and flu.

According to a study conducted by David Nieman, PhD, a professor of public health and director of the Human Performance Lab at Appalachian State University., regular exercise stands out as the best option to keep away the illness.

The study says that light aerobic activity – walking, cycling and jogging should be done for 30 to 60 minutes in a day as this increases the circulation of white blood cells and other cells that have the capacity to fight the flu germs.

The study also says that after 75 minutes of continuous workout, the body spikes the cortisol level and makes the immune system weak. So, in this case less is really more.

Three hours after an exercise workout the circulation of the immunity-boosting cells slows down to to pre-workout levels.

It is also important to do cardio, strength and weight training to maintain muscle mass to prevent unwanted weight during winters.

To prevent the common cold and flu limit your exercise to no more than an hour!
