Health benefits of celery (ajwain)

Celery is a vegetable, the leaves of which are used in salads. It has a crunchy stalk and is often consumed as a low calorie snack.

However, it has other reasons why it should be included in your diet.

Celery is beneficial for the digestive tract and cardiovascular system.

The seeds of the plant have also been used to relieve joint pain.

Boiling and blanching of celery leads to an antioxidant loss around 40%, while steamed celery retains 83-99% of antioxidant property.

Celery contains a flavanoid called luteolin and researchers believe that this particular flavonoid may posses anti-cancer properties according to a study published in Current Cancer Drug Targets.

Celery is very rich in vitamin K and also contains folate, vitamin A, potassium and vitamin C.

It also provides some dietary fiber too – 1.6 grams of fiber per 100 grams.
