Obesity can lead to 8 more types of cancer

Obesity can lead to a host of problems from premature heart attacks to joint problems; but the worst is cancer.

A new research has warned that being obese or overweight may lead to eight more types of cancer than previously thought.

The eight additional types of cancer identified are – stomach, liver, gall bladder, pancreas, ovary, meningioma (a type of brain tumour), thyroid cancer and the blood cancer multiple myeloma.

Earlier, obesity was linked to cancer of esophagus (food pipe), pancreas, colon and rectum, breast (after menopause), endometrium (lining of the uterus), kidney, thyroid and gallbladder.

The findings are based on a review of more than 1,000 studies of excess weight and cancer risk analysed by WHO’s International Agency for Cancer on Research.

‘Many of the newly identified cancers have not been on people’s radar screens as having a weight component,’ said Graham Colditz.

‘Lifestyle factors such as eating a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight and exercising, in addition to not smoking, can have a significant impact on reducing cancer risk,’ Colditz said.

‘But losing weight is hard for many people. Rather than getting discouraged, those struggling to take off weight could instead focus on avoiding more weight gain,’ said Colditz.

Obesity should be seen as a danger sign and dealth with all seriousness!
